Music is a very important part of life at USNH. It is richly integrated into the fabric of the worship services and other areas of Society Life. We have youth and adult choirs, a folk-singing group, a jazz ensemble, a recorder ensemble, a Christmas Eve Orchestra and several other ad hoc musical groups. There are many opportunities to participate in this musical life via cabarets and musical shows, our most recent being “The Music Man”. We have a Sundays at Four Concert Series that invites local professional musicians to present special concerts.

Linda Pawelek has been Music Director at USNH since 1971. During that time the adult choir has been active on a regular weekly basis. She started a Youth Choir that sings monthly. Linda is a pianist and taught elementary school music for 30 years. At USNH she has been Music Director for many musicals presented by the various theater groups as well as being an accompanist/rehearsal director for canvas dinners, cabarets, and other special church related functions. She sings with the New Haven Chorale and has been a conductor in its Ensemble outreach program.

William Braun has been Associate Music Director since 1985. Bill is the USNH pianist. He is in charge of providing music for services in which the choir doesn’t sing, including most of the 9:15 AM services. Besides being the pianist for USNH, he is the long-time principal keyboardist for the New Haven Symphony and a member of the Wall Street Chamber Players. He is a noted accompanist for vocalists and instrumentalists throughout the region and has performed with several symphony orchestras in the US. Bill is also a music writer and critic and is a frequent contributor to Opera News and other publications.

The Adult Choir is under the direction of Linda Pawelek and meets to rehearse Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM, with a warm-up rehearsal on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM. The choir sings almost every Sunday at the 11:15 service from September through June and on special occasions at both services. The choir is always looking for new singers. The most important qualification is that you enjoy singing. Please contact Linda at 288-7051 if you are interested.

The Youth Choir is also under the direction of Linda Pawelek. This group is open to any child in the USNH Religious Education Program from first grade to eighth grade. The choir rehearses every Sunday from 12:30 AM-1:00 PM, except on the first Sunday of the month when they rehearse from 10:30 –11:00 AM between services. The Youth Choir sings in both services once a month and joins the adult choir for special occasions. Call Linda if your child is interested in joining at 288-7051.

Musicians who wish to share their talents, whether they are singers or instrumentalists, should speak with Bill Braun or Linda Pawelek.

The Recorder Ensemble meets a few times a year in order to play for services when requested. (Linda Pawelek, co-ordinator)

The Folk Singers meet the second Sunday of every month and sing at USNH services four or five times a year. The group is always happy to greet new members. Rehearsals are at the home of Barbara Dobay and Bjorn Ljungstrom, in

An intergenerational pick-up-choir sings at the Openng Service in September , when everyone returns after a summer hiatus. We also sing once or twice a year for special services. We meet for one rehearsal just prior to the service when we sing.
