A Nation of Immigrants

Several years ago, while Liz and I were in the New York Tenement Museum gift shop, I saw a book that I did not know existed–“A Nation of Immigrants” by President John F. Kennedy–and I thought, ‘How far have we come as a country!’ We once celebrated, and understood ourselves, as the proud gathering of all the peoples of the world under one powerful notion–to be free, to be equal, to be a citizen. And this issue isn’t going away after Nov. 5th–immigration is something with abiding and real spiritual ramifications…
