Buddhist Perspectives on Hope and Faith

Using the USNH December theme of HOPE as a springboard, I will begin by contrasting ordinary hope and spiritual hope.  Ordinary hope is closely linked to our fears and is tied to outcomes.  Spiritual hope is unrelated to the future, but lives a life of its own in the present, arising from the depth of a courageous heart.  This type of hope is closely related to the Buddhist understanding of faith.  Here faith is not a religion, doctrine, or belief system.  Faith develops in stages and rests on the inner qualities of trust and confidence.  Ultimately, faith unfolds as we learn to trust our own deepest experience.
