Six hundred years before Jesus, a wandering mystic named Lao Tzu was leaving China for the frontiers of Tibet, and into the shadows of history. A gatekeeper said, “You cannot leave without sharing your wisdom.” So the old man got off his water buffalo and went into the Gatetower and in three days wrote the Tao Te Ching–no wonder it’s so short! But it is the spiritual text that dovetails with the Sermon on the Mount for me, and over the years has given me grounding and uplift both. It’s hard to translate, but let’s just call it the Way. Or the Path. Or the Gate to all Mystery. Let’s call it the (hopefully) perfect summer sermon in uncertain, stressful times!
