“Unmasking”

There is a long list of outrages surrounding us right now, in perhaps the most dangerous time we have faced since the Civil War, and it is hard to select one topic most pressing–but we start this new congregational year with a sermon aimed at the harm and horror of an America where masked police/soldiers refusing to identify themselves are literally plucking people off of our streets and “disappearing” them without due rights or legal process.  This reality makes our society almost unrecognizable, a betrayal not just of our laws but basic humanity and a common moral life.  It is past time to unmask, and figure out who we are.
