Justice In Action

Whether you are new to USNH or have been involved for years, justice work is one of the primary ways we live our values. Our faith comes alive through service, advocacy, and partnership.

Together, members and friends of all ages work to support democracy, confront racism, support immigrants and refugees, address hunger and homelessness, protect the planet, and promote peace and human dignity—locally and around the world.

There are many ways to get involved. You do not need prior experience to participate. Wherever your passions lie, you will find meaningful opportunities to act, learn, and grow in community.

Waverly / USNH Partnership

Provides preschool reading experiences, school-age tutoring, and other engaging activities in partnership with residents of Waverly Townhouses in New Haven. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.

UU the VOTE

Provides an opportunity to bring our democratic values to life in the crucial struggle to build a genuine multiracial democracy. UU the Vote at USNH engages people in issue education and get-out-the-vote initiatives, including post carding, phone banking and door-to-door canvassing. Twice we were awarded Good Trouble Congregational status from UU the Vote for our degree of congregant involvement and extensive efforts to “Get Out the Vote.”

CONECT

(Congregations Organized for a New Connecticut)

USNH is one of more than 40 members of CONECT, a collective of churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and civic organizations from New Haven and Fairfield Counties representing more than 30,000 people. This collective has made an impact on issues as varied as gun violence, health insurance rates, police reform, immigrant rights, a clean slate for ex-offenders, and more.

Task Forces

Our Task Forces offer meaningful ways for members and friends of USNH to live out our values through service, education, and advocacy. Each group focuses on a specific area of community care and social responsibility, working both within our congregation and in the wider world to promote justice, compassion, and positive change. All are welcome to learn more, participate, and help make a difference.

  • The Anti-Racism Task Force leads our community in examining institutional practices, culture, and relationships through an anti-racist lens. The group works to deepen awareness, foster accountability, and strengthen our connections with the wider community.

  • This task force focuses on reducing the congregation’s environmental impact through sustainable building practices, reuse initiatives, and education. It also promotes advocacy and action rooted in environmental justice.

  • The Food Insecurity Task Force collects non-perishable food items to support both the USNH community and Hamden’s Keefe Center Food Pantry to help meet broader community needs.

  • This task force partners with the New Haven Immigrant Coalition, Unidad Latina en Accion, and Junta to support immigrants and their families. Partnering with New Start Ministries affords opportunities for volunteering with refugees. Team members assist with practical daily needs, second-language learning, and legal needs where possible.

  • This task force works to ensure that USNH is a welcoming and affirming space for LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones. It also promotes justice, freedom, and equality for LGBTQ+ communities locally, nationally, and globally.

  • The Peace and Justice Task Force encourages reflection, education, and action around issues of peace, human rights, and social justice. It supports advocacy efforts that align with our shared values of compassion and equity.
